Gainax launched the project to create a film ending for the series in 1997 first releasing Death Rebirth as a condensed character-based recap and re-edit of the TV series Death and the first half of the new ending Rebirth which was originally intended to be the full ending but could not be finished due to budget and time constraints. It is the first installment of the Neon Genesis Evangelion film series and consists of two parts Death and Rebirth separated by a short intermission.

Rebirth was intended as that re-worked ending but after production overruns Rebirth became only the first half of the first part of The End of Evangelion with some minor differences.
